What getting any board role is all about…

Networks? Yep. You need them.

Personal connections? Even more so. Who knows you and what do they say about you.

Experience? Increasingly it is experiences that are important.

Qualifications? Well, that depends on the audience. Few boards need it.

Mentors? Definitely. Lots and lots.

Your why? Of course! It all starts with why.

These are all necessary (or potentially necessary) components, but what getting a board role is really all about is VALUE.

What do I mean by value?

This is your contribution to the boardroom. Not a financial contribution, but who shows up. What you can uniquely offer the board in terms of your knowledge, your commitment, your curiosity, your thinking, and your intelligence - emotionally as well as intellectual.

And, for most who aspire to the boardroom, this is where the problems start.

You see, you may be the last person to really, fully appreciate your own unique value. If you are like the hundreds of aspiring board directors we’ve helped in the last few years secure their first board seats, you’ll have self-doubt, and perhaps a feeling that you don’t yet belong on any board.

Let me correct most of you. YOU HAVE VALUE. You just need to learn how to identify it, package it and articulate it. Then, you need to focus that value on whom you wish to serve.

And that, as they say, is where we come in.
