The main prize is a study tour with FDI’s founder, Paul Smith to explore different models of board governance and director performance.

Paul said the 2022 finalists were absolute standouts:

“The award was created to recognise and celebrate those board members who are tackling the big challenges of the future, sparking change from the top, and representing and reflecting the stakeholders they serve. The six finalists demonstrate the brilliant work being done in boards by thoughtful, curious and future-focussed directors. We hope their stories inspire others.”

The Future Director Award is an initiative by FDI, a leading director education platform and community, who have been making boardrooms and directors fit for their future, and the world’s, since 2015.

In its inaugural year, nominations were open to anyone based in Australia who held an active non-executive position (voluntary or paid) for over 12 months. Australia is the first country to celebrate the Future Director Award, with plans to take the awards global in the next few years.

The anonymised entries by the finalists were reviewed by a panel of diverse and international board directors and governance experts who assessed the positive impact nominees are having on their boards, companies, stakeholders, and the future, including,

  • Inclusive leadership inside and out of the boardroom

  • The courage to say no to the status quo

  • An ‘always-learning’ mindset

  • Awareness of the bigger world and your board’s impact

  • An eagerness to bring new thinking and tools to boards

  • General badassery
